LONGMONT — “The Chronicles of
Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” opens today,
taking moviegoers on a fantastical journey they can continue
once the credits roll.
Local “Narnia” events are plentiful this month, from the
stage to the church pews.
Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids in Boulder is presenting
the “Narnia” prequel “The Magician’s Nephew,” which opens
tonight as part of a double bill.
“This story explains how everything came to be,” said
artistic director Michelle Romeo, who directs the show.
“The Magician’s Nephew” follows a young boy on a mission to
heal his sick mother. The boy visits the land of Narnia,
encounters Aslan the lion and the evil witch, and brings back
a magical apple, which the boy’s mother eats, saving her,
Romeo explained.
“The core of the magic apple is planted and becomes the
tree that becomes the wardrobe the kids in future generations
find,” she said.
Romeo said she chose to perform the script because of the
film’s release.
“Even children’s movies like ‘Shrek’ have this cynicism
that is still reflected in our culture, and this is one story
that doesn’t,” she said. “(‘Narnia’) has faith and imagination
and childhood innocence.”
